Understanding Cultural Differences: Supporting International Students' Career Development

9/17/2021, 3-4 pm

About this event

Presenter:

Satomi Yaji Chudasama, NCC, CCC, GCDF is Senior Associate Director for Student Engagement in the Center for Career Development at Princeton University. Her journey in the career development field started more than 20 years ago when she was an international student advisor intern. The students’ dreams and aspirations inspired Satomi to transition into the career development field while completing her master’s degree in Counselor Education at Syracuse University. Alongside cultivating the expertise in supporting the overall college student population as a career development professional, she has also established herself as an expert in career development of international students by developing and spreading best practices in multiple universities she has worked at. She is an inaugural member and former co-chair of the NCDA International Student Services Committee. Satomi is also a founding member and President-Elect of the Asia Pacific Career Development Association (APCDA) where she will assume her President role on October 1, 2021.

Session Description:

Recently, more career development professionals have become aware of the needs and challenges of international students’ career development, especially around visa regulations pertaining to employment in the U.S. In addition to understanding employment visa situations, it is important for career development professionals to become familiar with cultural differences presented by international students. It is also helpful for career development professionals to be able to identify cultural differences and their own cultural biases while supporting this student population. In this program, you will deepen knowledge of contrasting cultural norms between U.S. and other countries, learn a strategy for effectively identifying and addressing cultural differences, and understand common challenges, needs, and strengths of international students. You will also have an opportunity to interact with other participants for brainstorming and idea-sharing
