Each of Us an Expert:

What is Career Trauma?

Thursday, October 26, 2023 |12 - 1 PM

Via Zoom

You may be asking yourself “what is career trauma?”, which is a question many of our clients ask too! Oftentimes we dismiss behaviors from workplace settings that we wouldn’t tolerate or permit from friends or family. Work is intrinsically tied to how we meet our basic needs (paycheck = rent, gas and/or grocery money) and so how do we navigate times when it is also the source of our feelings of rejection, defeat and negative self-talk? This presentation will cover defining career trauma (and what isn’t), tools for every career development professional when they are working with clients experiencing or healing from trauma in their workplace, and better understanding when it might be time to refer out (and to what type of professional!).

Presenters:

Rae Stout is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Colorado and a certified career counselor through NCDA. She has 12 years of experience working at the intersection of career development and mental health and is most passionate about working alongside clients as they answer those existential questions like “who am I?” and “how do I want to show up in the world?”. Through this, a theme of career trauma started coming up with many of her clients, which she has specialized in for the last 5+ years. She is EMDR trained and uses it in both a mental health and career counseling context.

Amanda Chenkin is a licensed professional counselor in Colorado and Maryland and a certified career counselor through NCDA. She is in private practice and owner of Choice Career Counseling (www.choicecareercounseling.com). She has over 15 years working in career development and eight years working at the intersection of career development and mental health. Amanda loves working with clients who are feeling "stuck" and navigating how to write their next chapter in life. Career trauma is also a theme that she started to notice with clients and has recently started specializing in this area.
